He graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti of Venice in 1926, and soon after he started working at M.V.M. Cappellin where he replaced Vittorio Zecchin as artistic director. He initially created transparent blown glass pieces with essential forms, particularly with conic shapes. He then began to design light glass pieces in bright coloured pasta vitrea, or pieces decorated with festoons (fenici). In 1930 he presented in Monza the refined collection of lattimi with gold or silver leaf together with the canne verticali and millefiori glass pieces. In 1932 the M.V.M Cappellin closed down for bankrupt, and in 1934 he became Venini’s artistic director until 1947. During these years he experimented and innovated many traditional techniques by which he created marvelous pieces such as mezza filigrana, a fasce applicate, sommersi, corrosi and battuti, the famous multicoloured murrine with battuto finishes. After the war period, Carlo Scarpa returned almost exclusively to his work as an architect and teacher.
